After a handful of rumors, Nintendo has officially announced Mario Super Sluggers, a Wii baseball title starring the colorful cast of Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario Super Sluggers was the first game to be announced at Nintendo's 2008 Media Summit.

No date was confirmed, but Sluggers will presumably hit stores later this year to bolster the Wii's weak '08 lineup.

Nintendo reports that Sluggers will use a control scheme similar to that featured in Wii Sports Baseball. The company also described Mario Super Sluggers as an attempt to win over the casual crowd that adored Wii Sports

All in all, the title looks like a decent dose of Nintendo-style fun, but nothing too special. I am, however, happy to see a game that capitalizes heavily on the unique control scheme of the Wii.

Good job, Nintendo. Release deluxe versions of all the games you already gave to US Wii players for free.

Then give me a bigger beefed up version of the Boxing with better controls and Mario characters AND KOOPA TROOPA!!!
