PC-Windows - Crytek goes cross-platform

Crytek company president Cevat Yerli has confirmed that the company will no longer be making PC-exclusive games, as problems with rampant piracy of their title Crysis have forced them to change their tactics.

"We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis," Yerli said. "We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable."

In an interview with PC Play Magazine, Yerli complained that pirated games are "inherently destroying the platform," and that they will continue to support the PC--just not exclusively.

"It was a big lesson for us and I believe we won¹t have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future," Yerli said.

It's hard to argue that piracy alone is the sole cause of dwindling PC game sales over the years. If I were to pinpoint a reason myself, I'd say that most PC gamers long ago grew tired of having to patch every game upon release and questioning whether or not their home platform could even run it once it hit the market.

Of course, I speak only as a recent PC-to-Console gamer convert myself.

Yerli went on to say that Crytek's internal focus is not currently on bringing Crysis to consoles, though that doesn't mean an outside developer may not take a crack at it. In fact, rumors persist that the game will eventually make its way to the PlayStation 3, so we'll just have to wait and see.
